I'm just passing this info along whenever I see people talking about steering shaft swaps.

That GM part no. you referenced is discontinued. The Dorman shaft you referenced has a DD upper connection which is applicable to a late square body, not the earlier splined column. Once again, bits and pieces of the puzzle. Somewhere, sometime, someone will post the entire story.

You know what, you have surprised the crap out of me. Your first posts I figured OK this guy has big dreams is over his head on the knowledge, and he's never going to complete it. 99% wouldn't have. Good job man!!!. I'm telling you this, because I think you have the perseverance and willingness to learn. Reconditioning these boxes isn't hard. It's not for everyone 99% don't even understand where all the adjustments are what they do and what adjustments to make in what order. But I'm sure you can fix your box,or on disassembly you'll see something not replaceable is worn and you'll know then, yep just buy one.
Thanks for your support. I’m finally just reading this now. Maybe I am over my head :) Bought my truck when I was 14 and have been working on it since. I kinda think I want to rebuild it now but not sure yet or if I have time

I don't think you're over your head, thought so in the begining, but everything you started, you finished with pretty good results. Don't discount yourself, most people would have started your project and given up.

Well this really wasn't too tough punched in the GM number, got 2 compatible components, took less less than a minute,Im sure if I tried harder I could find more using the GM number.Sorry I inconvenienced you. Maybe you should gather all the data and compile the comprehensive how to for the rest of
us.

These folks have every individual part or the entire unit... they aren't cheap though.

That's why I posted the Holly one I have its half the price and has 2-3 times the collapsable length and the correct splined ends.

End A - 3/4 in. 30-spline x 3/4 in. DD

End B - 1 in. 48-spline x 1 in. DD

The DD section is the middle collapsible section.

I'd rather have 6-8" of collapse then most others 2-3"

I knew nothing about steering boxes so I bought a Redhead unit for my 84 K10 and I am really pleased with it. It was a little stiff at first but I have no regrets.

The Holley shaft in your link is solid, non-collapsable, but the one you pictured is collapsable....so confusing.

In the same boat here. The steering is loose and the box is wet with fluid. Biggest problem is our garage was demolished last summer and we are getting a new one built but all the tools- at least the majority- are in storage near Pittsburgh in a POD in a warehouse. 1978 K20 new to us over the winter.

Summits pictures are incorrect as that's the exact one I purchased.

Okay, I just spent the past half hour with Summit, you're correct, it's collapsable. Says so in the descript, and beings it's 3/4 DD/30 spline on one end, and 1" DD/48 spline on the other, it's collapsable. Holley uses the same pictures, so I had to verify.

.....it took me a half hour because I couldn't resist spending money on several other things.

So I’m having to replace the steering box in my 74 Suburban c2500. My mechanic friend recommended Redhead to me so that’s the way I’ll be going

I purchased a Red head box about 4 years ago and I am still really happy with it, definitely recommend steering shaft, think i used a jeep shaft cause it was cheaper. Also go with O rings, I chased a leak at pump
for a while until I got those. I’m running 35” tires with 4” lift on an 1982 K20 and the box has held up pretty good.
Customer service is is really good.
