If it’s gonna get used, paint will get scratched and scraped off quickly regardless of what it is. If it’s a show truck, no one paints the wood bed. Stain, varnish urethane etc.
Not to mention, por 15 while apparently works on wood is a very unconventional wood sealer.
In short any “paint” is a bad idea for any intended use in this application.

I taked to a boat shop for advice. Unfortunately i dont remember it all.

Since we used pine we also had to use something first to keep it from splotching. Then some high dollar stain and sealer but was able to buy all at HD.

Took a lot of hours and stains look vastly different on woods and sealers so test on bottom. We used staining rags.

I'll check my records for the brands and pictures

Bruce Horkey has been providing bed wood and hardware for a few decades. Their recommended products are "Old Masters" brand stain and marine spar varnish. I used their products on a '69 stepside that I restored and the results were very good. I recently used the marine spar varnish on my friends lil red truck exterior bedside and tailgate wood with great results. I was able to order the spar varnish from Walmart for $50 a quart IIRC. The marine spar varnish will take the weather and UV rays well.

I thought about doing my wood bed from scratch and was also concerned on the staining and finishing. Ultimately I went with Bedwood.com and got a nice Hickory long bed fleetside with all stainless steel fasteners and a Hydro Satin finish. I will put a nice bedcover on it, to protect it some from rain and UV exposure. Everything is pre cut to fit, and it's a really nice product. A bit expensive yes, but what isn't expensive these days?

Bottom line, despite some of the off the wall recommendations, knowing you want a shiny show quality bed floor as the final product, any quality exterior rated urethane varnish is what you want for the top coats, over bare wood or your choice of stain.
If your just want durable weather resistance then oil based stain is the way to go. Like a deck oil.
Specific brands are largely personal preference.
Remember every time you add color with another coat of any semi transparent product, penetrating or high build, it gets darker.

It takes a brave man to have a wooden bed in a truck. I have trouble keeping paint on the stake sides on mine.

I'm a luthier by trade, thus know more than I'd prefer to about wood finishes. (Finishing sucks.) Since you're parking the truck in a garage, I'd suggest something like Watco Danish oil. Plan to reapply it once or twice a year depending on how well it holds up. It's a good penetrating finish for floors and other surfaces. Brings out the figure in the wood, and repels water quite well.

UV exposure is your enemy, far more than water. Also please be aware that if you use linseed oil, it will foster mildew growth, and that will eventually blacken the wood.

My bed floor is 3/16" steel plate. I paint it every few years whether it needs it or not. The only place I "show" it is at the transfer station when I tip a load ;).

And yes, thank you, I already know I'm an a$$hole. Born that way, but also have decades of practice.

This thread recalls a conversation I had with my brother about 38 years ago when he had bought a new truck. He said he was planning to load some masonry waste into it, and I asked if he was going to get a bedliner.

"It's a f**kin' truck!" he replied. That line has come back into memory many times when I was about to get too particular about one of my trucks.

You might say I do and have done a bit of woodwork. Clues of a little of what I have done can be seen in the links below. Some of the items are from over fifty years ago.

To get the best performance out of your finished product, you have to start with the wood you chose. Than means not only choosing durable wood, like white oak, but insuring you start out with it being at a good level of moisture content.

Generally, most hardwood you buy is going to be in a ballpark of the moisture content you are shooting for. Say, around 8%.

Then comes the matter of keeping it around there (8%).



Dealing with trying to keep wood in good shape, whether indoors or outdoors, consumed a lot of my time.

In the end, and abuse aside, you are dealing with problems from moisture gains and losses.

As wood loses moisture, it shrinks. That causes it to crack and split.

Going the opposite way, if wood gains moisture, it swells. That can blow joints apart and it WILL cause surface coats to separate from the wood.

The foregoing is why moving a piece of furniture from, for example, Death Valley to the Pacific Northwet, or visa versa, can be a problem.

ONE of the reasons it is often a problem for furniture is, builders save money by focusing just on the outside of the piece of furniture. Look at your average chest-of-drawers and you'll notice the inside and drawers are unfinished.

If all the insides were finished, it would slow down the gain and loss of moisture, which would reduce the chance of damage to the wood by sudden moisture content changes.

Mindful of the foregoing, it will pay to treat the sides, edges and ends of each piece of wood, with a great deal of focus on the ends, which gain and lose moisture the quickest.



Stain is a surface coat, though it will fill the grain pores. It holds up to UV better than do dyes, which penetrate, and tend to show the grain more.

The average stain is oil based. That oil is a hardening oil (e.g., linseed or tung oil that have been polymerized) to perform their task. After hardening (they react with oxygen), finish is fair game. Millions of gallons of polyurethane and other finishes have been applied over stains.

Generally, heavy bodies oils, like those used for house paining, will hide much of the grain.

I prefer the oil based stains. In part, because they are more forgiving of lap marks (going back over what you did a board or two back, and causing the overlaps to be heavy on the stain, compared to other spots).

I whittled my stain collection down from about 40 quarts to around twenty or so. Not one of the cans bragged/brags about being for exterior. Most that heavy lifting [against UV damage (fading) is done by the finish.


Before getting into any other details on finishes, be aware satin finishes suck. That is, were you to apply enough coats, you would not be able to see the wood or grain, because the satin effect is achieved by floating things in the finish. For that reason, if I want a satin finish, I use gloss, then, when the finish is fully hard, I buff it with 0000 (four ought) steel wool to take the sheen off.

The specialty finishes used on newer flooring are impressive. I've subcontracted to have maple floors finished with them installed, but have not, otherwise, used them, so I don't know how they'd hold up to the elements and UV. I do know they are impressive INDOORS.

I have done a lot of square feet of oak floors with poly. The poly used for those projects are called short oil finishes, which is just a way of saying, less polymerized hardening oil is used in the formulation. That is because short oil finishes are harder, so stand up to foot traffic better.

On the other hand, there are the long oil finishes. By adding more hardening oil, they are not as hard as the short oil finishes. The advantage of that is, they are more flexible, so shift with changes in the wood better than the short oil finishes. That is why nautical finishes use long oil finishes.

Keep in mind, that durable finish for wood floors doesn't suffer the elements. They are less likely to be exposed to major shifts in humidity because of things like HVAC and such.

Every floor I refinished got a unique finish in that I would thin the poly about 15% to 20% then flood the floor with it. That caused the thinned poly to saturate sides and much of the back, as well as the ends.

I kept working the poly so areas that sucked it up got re-covered with more. And, by working the poly, it had less ability to react with the oxygen in the air.

The longer the finish was worked, the more time it had to soak in, rather than just being a surface coat, which is what 99% of the finishes out there are. The deeper the finish penetrate, the better at sealing the wood against moisture gain and loss.

ON A SIDE NOTE: I use non-hardening oils on butcher blocks and kitchen utensils. Years back, I bought an end grain butcher block on the cheap. It was cheap because it had been neglected, resulting in extreme drying, which caused cracking, splitting and separations of some of the joinery.

I flooded the butcher block with thinned mineral oil, and kept adding to it where ever oil soaked in. I worked the oil in over a couple hours, then set a can of oil near it and would add more as I walked by going to and from other projects. After a day or two, I left it alone and forgot about it. A few weeks later, I checked it out and was surprised to see the oil, in replacing the lost moisture, swelled the wood, making all the cracks, splits and separations to seem to have disappeared.

Be aware, Watco Danish oil is just hype and bull. It's just poly thinned, then thinned some more, so it's easy to apply. They don't use actual Danes (snort). Essentially, you are paying a lot more for thinner and poly.

Where it and its equivalents shine is, easy application. You can wipe one several applications in a day, building the finish, and you won't have to worry about brush marks. The thinned and low mil applications harden quickly.

NOTE: If a coat does harden, you MUST scuff before applying the next or the coats will separate from each other in time. I like the fine buff cloths for that. They are less aggressive than using, say, 320 sandpaper, or even 400 and don't load with finish as easy.

The down side is, I never apply less than 5 applications, and usually apply 7, or more, to get to where I'm happy with the level of protection the finish ill produce.

You point to a point my post neglected - PAINT is the ultimate finish for surfaces.

I should add to that a reminder, just as with everything else in life, there are no silver bullets. . . . That is, EVERYTHING needs maintenance. Key is, how hard is the maintenance going to be? Will you have to strip the finish? Will you catch it before it goes south, LIGHTLY scuff it and re-new it. Or will it just be a matter of cleaning the item and adding the next application, as with shellac or non-hardening oil.

All that aside, I'd love to have a month, or three, to hang around you to pick your brain. I have the tools and equipment (right down to the over-arm pin router), but lack the experience to yet play in your world.

I did dive deep into the world of finishes folks like you look to. I was amazed at what the minerals and such ran, back when I did the dive. For example, some selling for hundreds and ounce. I, also, was amazed at how many who were beyond impressive in their lutheran skills argued about finishes, especially when you brought THE Strad violins into play.

I found sad comedy in some of the conversations that ensued. On one hand, people sought tone woods. On the other, many thought filling pores of wood with specialty minerals was sac religious. sound aside.

Oh, and my bed is diamond plate. Until you get under the truck and see the tired and sad oak left. . . .

YUP! There's plenty of threads out there with people using this method. 3 coats por-15, all six sides, not just the bottom, and 3 coats high quality exterior black paint, all six sides, not just the bottom.

Couldn't find the tests and results Mar-K did over a many year time period. Por-15 and paint held up the best in the tests. Was hoping I had saved it on a drive at work, but nope. I do have a printed hard copy somewhere at home.

With that, this is what it looks like. Also, from what I understand, factory boards were black. EDIT: Squares got body color wood beds and strips. Older trucks got linseed oil mixed with black.

I bought a 49 chevy truck from a guy who had built a flatbed for it. It had a black tar like coat on it that lasted three times as long as linseed which is what I've been using for years. But the linseed only lasts a year, by my experience. I am guessing he made his black tar-paint by thinning down foundation coating, probably 1:1 with paint thinner or something similar. His tar paint was so thin it didnt come off, it soaked in real good.
