Finally got a running 65 C10

Just popping in here to say thank you. I used one of those 1" to 3/4" PEX adapters today to make a 5/8" to 3/4" heater hose connection on my daughter's truck. Not only does it work great, but it's far cheaper and more compact than a heater hose adapter fitting.

I removed mine for the new core but it went in the top drawer lol

Dash bare metal. Hated to ask my buddy to come take the glass out that he’s so painstakingly put in not even six months ago, but to do it right it really needed to come out. We got it out in one piece, with the thought that it should go in easier this time now that the gasket has formed to the truck.

Truck is surprisingly structurally sound around the windshield. Zero holes on the bottom, not even any pitting. There is a small hole up top that I’m going to tack weld. I’m going to sand and paint all of the interior except for most of the ribbed part on the ceiling. I’ll treat that for rust, but I’m not going to sit there and sand all that for a show finish, they make a nice headliner that fits over that piece so that’s what I’ll do.

I went to four different auto parts stores and could not find the Nissan Sunlet sand for the interior. So I said, I’ll go to the actual paint shop and have some cans made to match. They couldn’t do it! I have no idea why, but all three or four employees behind the desk Acted like there just wasn’t any way for them to make it. I even gave them an updated paint code that I found online and they couldn’t do it. So I got online and ordered three cans of the Nissan paint, they will be here Saturday.

I guess floorboards and rockers are indeed next, and not Transmission like I had hoped. But it will be good to get those done. I think after Christmas, I’m going to start ordering panels. If they’re anything like the square bodies, you have to slice them eight different ways and make them fit. I always wondered what happens to the old tooling and machines that made these panels and such. I guess they scrapped them.

I didn’t plan on all of this, but like I said, it’s a snowball effect with me and I can’t do much half ass. Oh, I tried to repair the cracks in the original steering wheel, with some two part epoxy. It seems to work great, however, getting the surface finish like it was factory even with a Dremel is going to be extremely hard if not impossible. All that stuff is Gloup in such a weird crevice it would take a lot more than I really want to put into it. I’m going to keep the steering wheel, but i’m going to order a new one, they have some really nice reproduction ones. Honestly, I’m thinking about getting a 66, it comes with the beauty trim that I can put my red Chevy center cap on. I included a picture of what I’m describing. I think it looks pretty classy.

I'm not sure the beauty ring steering wheel is 66 specific, I think I have a 65 brochure that shows it. The horn button/center looks like the one in Crusty. Either way, it'll look good. You may not like the big wheel with power steering.

Thats the center cap that mine came with, I was able to find a near NOS one cause mine is heavily pitted

Yeah I think Im gonna go ahead and get the new 15" and deal with harder steering until I get PS

I'm not sure the beauty ring steering wheel is 66 specific, I think I have a 65 brochure that shows it. The horn button/center looks like the one in Crusty. Either way, it'll look good. You may not like the big wheel with power steering.

Crusty has the better gauge setup, mine just has dummy lights. I guess yours was a higher trim level.

I think I’m going to revisit the wheel lol. That almost $400 could be spent on other things. Namely gauges. For some reason when I bought the tack and the three gauge pod, I bought white face gauges. Well that doesn’t go with my black face cluster. So I was thinking about finding a good auto meter set up for those. Some people retrofit them into the original cluster, but I don’t want to deal with all that. I’ve got one side pretty close, I’ve got to go pick up things like masks, more gloves and some primer today so I think I’ll get some more Dremel attachments. And just save the original steering wheel. Looking back, maybe I could’ve used a different type of epoxy, not really sure but this set up rock hard in 30 minutes. I took the Dremel and gouged the cracks out before I applied the epoxy. Guess I will work on it today

I don’t think this interior is getting painted tomorrow. It is SO humid and nasty here, 79 degrees and dripping. Bad thing about paint can primer is you have to wet sand it if you don’t want to ruin your paper. Gum it all up. So that’s got to dry. I’ve got the interior door to the garage open with a fan blowing in there but idk. Last night it was cold and low humidity but as I was painting today of course the gulf wind came back with a vengeance. I’m not meant to have nice things

I ALMOST talked myself into buying another paint, gun and some base clear for this thing, but I had to give that idea up because I can’t keep letting things snowball like I usually do.

I’m kind of worried about laying down a decent paint job with this duplicolor paint. It’s got metallic in it so it needs to be feathered in light layers, not just spray bombed like black or something. A real gun would be easy, a spray can with 3” spread at weird angles will be challenging

I’m kind of worried about laying down a decent paint job with this duplicolor paint. It’s got metallic in it so it needs to be feathered in light layers, not just spray bombed like black or something. A real gun would be easy, a spray can with 3” spread at weird angles will be challenging

Yep. And they don’t match 100%. Or at least the last can I used didn’t, it was darker. Luckily it had enough to put another coat on everything. I’m five cans in, I have two left to do the dash. It looks good from this distance, but there’s a lot of trash in it, even though I painstakingly prepped. What I didn’t have was a tack cloth. And I didn’t realize I needed it until I started painting. Those Ace Hardware torn up white T-shirts I bought to rub the wax and grease remover on were not lint free much to my dismay.

It’s too late now because I’m not sanding all that trash out just to re-spray. but I’m headed to O’Reillys to pick up a tack cloth for the dash.

This paint covers like water. It took about three coats to start seeing the color over the gray primer. Another four to get it where it’s at now. But I think overall it’s going to be fine
