Any thoughts on causes of this? Prevention?

Looking at an 86 c20. It's got a spot of rust on one cab corner and the other might be rusting. Seems normal. Fenders and bed are good. Floors are good. But this is both odd and concerning

Mice possibly.

Does it have cab lights?

I would stay away from that kind of rust repair myself. Huge can of worms. Usually runs down the a-pillars and rusts them too.

It doesn't. But that's my thoughts too. Whatever's causing water ingress might be all through the pillars.

When they are rusted that high, I usually think they have been around salt air and the coast. The red one was from Newport Beach CA and the whole cowl was toast. It had rust around the door jambs like you posted. The green and tan one was from Santa Barbara CA. Floors and rockers were mint in both trucks

After the last few years.....wonder if it was ever in a flood?

I remember looking at a car for someone about 10 yrs ago. Very clean but (heavier) rust in odd spots.....like the dash brackets, or inside the floor shifter bucket. Then I pulled the horn cap off and it was flaking-scaled rust inside and that was where I walked away.

From the history I have it's been here pretty much it's whole life. It's got no indications of being wet
That doesnt mean it couldnt have at one time been someplace there was one.

That truck looks familiar.
you’re right to be suspicious of that weird rust.
Look under the windshield and back window gaskets too.
it’s a crap shoot. At least he didn’t hide it.
