This is a build sheet sheet.

This is the document the assembly line workers use to know which part to put on the vehicle.

Sometimes there is a lot of proliferation of similar parts; sometimes the installation occurs way back in the bowels of the plant so there are not any context clues for what part to put on (although it can become glaringly obvious later if you make a mistake). The operator never gets to guess, and he never should put on "whatever he feels like".

These are used in all the remote areas of the plant where parts are build up and conveyed to the main line, including the seat cushion room, the tire/wheel bay, the axle build areas, the chassis line, body weld shop and trim.

That's why you tend to find them on top of the fuel tank (passenger cars, not so much trucks), under the carpet, above the headliner, under the dash, behind the A pillar, or built up into the seat.

The sheets were not "placed" there, as much as they were "left" there. They were supposed to be gathered up and thrown away like extra screws, coffee cups, love notes, etc, but sometimes it was easier (or necessary) to just leave them where they lay.

They were not preserved by the corporation so the only place they exist is if they are still in your vehicle (or somebody else's by mistake).

We still use build sheets taped to the vehicle to build products today.

This is a SPID label (Service Parts ID label)

This defines the option content of the specific vehicle so you can buy the correct service part.

99% of the time this is placed in the glove box (along with the camper label. All pickups got a camper label, too) but some plants, like Janesville, placed them on the inner fender for a specific period of time.

At this point I am compelled to put in a plug for a sister thread, covering the concept of "why we have RPOs", linked here:

The color code, RPO wise, is the two digit code followed by a "U" (=Upper, or primary) or "L" (= lower, or secondary). The WA number is the actual supplier recipe to create the color. Note that you can have different noun names for the same RPO code/WA number, due to marketing magic.

When I ran the fender set area at Flint Line 1 (second shift) my guy is the one that installed every SPID label and camper label (and floor shifter, and cab running lights).

This is the new stuff.

It has not yet been mentioned that because the OPs vehicle is a '79 model year truck the original invoice would be available through the Heritage Center.

This document would contain all the original build RPO content, pricing including any applicable discounts, build timing, original selling dealership info.

It might even have the original owner referenced, albeit misspelled, if the vehicle was customer ordered.

This information is also available through GM of Canada for any vehicle built in Canada, or built in the US for Canadian consumption.

Welcome. Gotta love that paint scheme. It says "Late 1970s" loud and clear :).

Awesome truck! I too have a 79 C10. Question for you guys. The marker lights on top of the cab dont work anymore. Tried fuzes and bulbs. No luck. Any ideas? Lastly the 8 track radio stopped working on me. You guys know anyone who fixes them anymore?

You might try Crutchfield.com for advice on your 8-track repair. They may know somebody.

As for the clearance lights, if it isn't bulbs or a fuse, it's wires or a switch. There's a pretty good chance the wire got interrupted on its way down from the roof. Find the bottom end of the wire and check continuity from there to the light fixtures, for starters.
