Well, thought I’d just install the new pump assembly- but this tank isn’t looking so good inside. It’s a Spectra replacement 40 gallon that PO put in prob 12+ years ago. Old assembly says Airtex on top, but looks like the actual pump has been replaced with a Bosch unit. Guess I’ll order a tank- any suggestions on best brand/supplier?

Curious, what is all this white substance on the pump assembly?

What makes you think the tank is no good? From the pics I think I see varnish and old yellow fuel. It’s not that old.

That yellow stuff- varnish or whatever it is- would have to be all cleaned off. Never done it and not sure how to go about it or if I can get it all clean.

I'd try to clean up that tank and replace the sending unit/pump and be back on the road. Roll some chain in there with some diesel and slosh around until clean. Rinse with something like gas or alcohol is my guess.

It’s a game of $ spent for solvent vs new tank.
But I’d guess a gallon of Naptha or Acetone is cheaper.
Plus this is a burb tank, correct? How much of it can be reached with a pressure washer nozzle? May be able to just blow it all off the bottom of the tank.

Just spit balling here... I wonder what a gallon of Berryman ChemDip would do if you poured it in the tank and sloshed it around a few times per hour.

When I worked in a shop we had a 5 gallon bucket of that stuff and it would make light work of fuel varnish and carburetor scuzz. One of the kids I worked with dropped a whole ford 302 intake manifold in there, he didn't scrape any of the grease or dirt off before. That manifold came out looking brand new but big Jim, our mechanic, wanted to kill him for ruining a brand new bucket of dip.

What brand of pump are you using? I have a Precision brand unit in my OBS Burb, probably going to have to put one in my DD Crew Cab and that's what the parts store has, for $165 IIRC....I get a commercial discount from a friend's account at certain O'Reilly's. Had to walk and bus ride yesterday to get a part; looks like I'll be doing that today too.

fwiw.....Airtex used to be Canadian, now 100% chi-com.....and the really cheap chi-coms to boot. I used to use them in alot of 4-N cars until high failure rates and then the best part: would find a large number literally wired backwards from the factory.

Not sure what sweat shop Bosch uses, maybe Delphi or even Delco (Rock Auto?). I used to find old stock originals on feebay as well.

@CalSgt - we had the same thing in the shop I worked at in the 70's. It worked great, but back then was methylene chloride. pretty sure its banned now

That stuff will work… It’d eat the hide off a rhino!
Do they still make the real stuff? Hadn’t thought about it but like most other “good stuff” figured it’s probably outlawed and replaced with an actual environmentally friendly, reverse osmosis water based, free range vegan organic variant that doesn’t cause fish to have 3 eyes or no eyes if it gets into a lake…
You wouldn’t even need to dump it in the tank. Just set it next to the tank and it’ll scare the varnish off like Chuck Norris!

Cripes, it’s like completing an entire Soduko book just to find parts that aren’t made of recycled crap and rice paper….
On another note, just in the last 12months, a real deal SKF unit bearing for a HD truck went from like $275 to $345. And as proof of WTF?????, 10 years ago the same part was about $220.
Or you can buy one on Scamazon for $165 and it will probably make it to the state line before it starts howling or the ABS light comes on!
And Napa….they sell the SKF one for ^, or they have a house brand for like $6 less….. why? Anyone buying a $300+ part for a $20-50k vehicle wants to save $6? And the guy at the counter tried hard to sell me it. “We sell them all the time to fleet shops like public works and schools….” Sure you do. They have bean counters and they’ll buy 2 of those for $12 cheaper and tow/repair it an extra time because govt employees and the shops are paid by the hour!
