in tank fuel pump

Hey all,
from y'alls experience, what is be the best way to replace the in tank fuel pump on a square body, drop the tank, or pull the bed ?
I have a fuel pump that needs replacing, if and when i do, i will replace both pumps at the same time. Just curious as the which method is easier, or less of a hassle.

I've got the burb tank under my bed so it's easier for me to pull the bed.

But with you having saddle tanks, it's a toss up. Although it appears you have a long bed dually....may be more difficult to pull the bed.

Of course, when you have the bed off, you'll be able to clean up any rust and such that you find while it's off. Be a good time to change your shocks as well.

Just a thought.

I pulled a bed once. It ******* sucked. After that the pump failed in 10 months. That time I cut a hole in the bed and swapped the pump in WAY less time and way less effort. I put a hinge and latch on the fuel pump access hatch. The next buyer was very pleased that I made this mod and bought the truck without hesitation. If you were buying a truck, would you want it to have an access hatch? Ya, me too....

Drop the tank and put it in with longer fuel hoses. Search the forum, you will find good info bout dropping the tanks and sending unit install.

I’d vote dropping the tanks and extending the fuel lines on the reinstall. The lines from 1988 are likely to be stiff and ready for replacement anyway.

You can’t get the pumps out even with the bed off. You need to drop the tanks.

Drop them with the brackets. They bolt from inside the frame. The brackets are not the same front and rear. The repro brackets fit pretty good.

If you buy the tank isolator kit(s) from LMC just know you are getting scraps of roofing felt. I got hosed by this. Ended up buy some 1/16". x 2" rubber strips from Amazon. That stuff worked perfect.

While you have the fuel pumps out look in the tanks. If there is any rust just replace them. They are not expensive and will save you an issue down the road.

I used strips of left over roofing ice n water shield. Tar paper, rubber strips etc all work great.

What made me so mad about the scraps of roofing felt was they do not mention what the material is on their site and they are literally scraps. For what you charged me, try and make it look good. Cut them to the proper size. Make an effort.

Question,
what is the advantage / disadvantage of using the plastic clamp vs metal clamps in the in tank electric pump?
This is the deplhi FE0114, 60psi pump. I have 12psi at the TBI.

i installed new gates clamps on the sending unit when i dropped the tank and installed the new pump.
