Spare tire mounted under the front bumper?

several companies make hitch mounted swing away carriers also. that way no permanent mods to the bumper or metal

I think it would be possible to make a hitch mount that flips down out of the way when you need to open the back (dunno if you have tailgate or barn doors). And if you are towing a trailer, stick the spare somewhere in/on the trailer. Anything hitch mounted tends to rattle around though, whether it be bike carriers, mobility scooter platforms or whatever. Having some sort of secondary attachment point is helpful just to stabilize things. I had a friend with a Jeep using a swing-out spare carrier, it worked well but we had to come up with some sort of plastic bushings to keep it from clattering on every bump.

You are correct.

Currently I'm using a modified heavy duty Thule bicycle carrier, and yep - it flips down. It actually has a shock absorber on it, so the tire swings down at a controlled rate. And you are correct about a secondary attachment point. I use a quick release and a turnbuckle on a chain, which stabilizes everything, along with a hitch stabilizer.

Its quick and easy access to the tailgate - you just pop the quick release and press down on an aluminum release lever - and the tire moves out of the way. To put it back into position, you just push the tire back into position and it latches automatically. Reconnect the quick release and your good to go.

I would like a traditional tire carrier, but this setup works well in the mean time.

Under the front would FUBAR your approach angles or ability to bomb through mud or snow.
Bumper mount of some sort to swing out of the way for me.

That would be perfect. I would like to have something like that, but I don't have the patience to build one, and I think it would cost more that I would want to send to have it built. My price point is like... $100 for something used. Maybe as much as $250 to buy or have built if it was really awesome.

$100 will get you 4 good tie downs.
