new 350 for free, well kinda lol

Yea I've been looking at that one, is there anything I can do to these heads to make um breath s little better without spending a ton of money? I was thinking about pulling the head to make sure the valve didn't break off inside. Think that's a good idea?

Vortec heads breathe better than old school 2.02 double humps right out of the box. If you're running old school 1.94s and upgrade to Vortecs you can expect 50-70 more horsepower just bolting them on. Of course you'll need a Vortec compliant intake but many of the aftermarket parts manufacturers make them.

that engine looks like they were religious with oil changes, or they were running synthetic oil.
And those 2 barrel rochesters are good carbs, but I would throw a q-jet on there...you are going to need those 2 extra barrels to keep the frown from your face when you stomp on it, but if tuned right, you could get 20 mpg or a little better, depending on your engine combo.

The only way to get any head to breathe better is to port it. I don't think I'd waste to much time porting those heads. I also know this about that cast #, they are prone to cracking with one good overheat. As C4 said, if you want heads to breathe good, Vortecs are the way to go and you don't even have to port them for a huge difference over those heads.

Unless you're wanting to replace the head gaskets too, you don't have to pull the head for an inspection. Do a compression test on the cylinder and that will tell you if the valve is working ok or not. Also put a starter motor on the engine and crank it over a few times watching the valve train and look and listen for any popping, bending, twisting or griding in the valvetrain.

X3...Vortecs are the answer. Those heads you have are prone to cracking through the center exhaust seats. I would call Scoggin-Dickey and see what they recommend. There has been a lot of talk on which vortecs are best. I have always heard that you should stay away from the ones off the HD trucks...906 I think is the number. They have a funky exhaust seat that hinders flow.

Im gonna start looking for some as soon as I get off work, what does a good setup run, heads and intake?

Nope Nope Nope !!! You'll need small block chevy heads, Not LS motor heads. NO 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 or 6.2 heads. Chevy 350 or 5.7 heads is what you're looking for.

At a local junk yard I found a set of Vortecs for $300, the guy said 906's or 062's whichever I wanted. (I haven't picked them up yet) For intake Edelbrock has a Vortec Performer carb intake for about $170 I think on Jegs/Summit, you might find them a little cheaper for different brands, maybe not. You're getting ready to do what I'm planning to do lol and been researching for months.

well pulled the heads today... 090 over and the cylinder walls dont look so hoti can see where all the pistons sat. . need advice, i have heard most people stop at 060 over. heres some pics

Honestly, I've seen alot worse. I still see some crosshatching in the cylinders. That would tell me the wear isn't to severe for a rering job. Check the top of the cylinder for ridge. If you can't feel any, get you a ball home to knock the glaze off the cylinders, and reset your crosshatch pattern, rering it and run it. IF it is indeed at .090, don't overheat it and you'll be good to go.

Are you sure the "090" isn't "060" upside down?

Some do make that mistake. One bank is .060 over, and the other bank is .090 over. Many times there will be a dashed line under the 6 or 9 to designate which it is for certain.
