The spring perches do need moved, but it's well worth it.

Grind the welds of the perches off the axle tubes and re-weld them where they need to be. Maybe half a day's work.

A garage would charge whatever their hourly rate is, x 3 or 4 hours. A welding shop or driveline shop might give a decent bid of around $100 or a little less.

12 bolt has 8-5/8" ring gear, 14sf has 9-1/2" ring gear, may have slightly larger wheel bearings too. Not as great of an improvement as a 14 bolt full-floater would be but they are only available in 8-lug. You may be able to find an aftermarket company who sells 6-lug outer hubs for them though.

It actually is a very big upgrade. If you ever see pics of the carriers, axles, etc side by side... it's a big difference. Even though the 14SF is between the 12bolt and 14FF in strength, it's far closer to the FF than it is the 12bolt.

I've actually seen some 14b Semi Floats with 2 sets of perches. I have a feeling, one set is for GMT400 body, and one set was for Squarebody. To save the grinding work and leaving ugly marks on the axles tube, I'd probably just buy a new set of perches and weld them on leaving the OEM ones on the axle if they aren't in the way of shock brackets etc.

It's certainly a worthwhile upgrade. Still a C clip axle retainer, but you could always use C clip eliminators if felt you wanted away from those. But you do have more strength in the carrier, gears and axles.

The other set of perches is just for the bumpstop that's mounted to the frame (they are wider too). The GMT400 perches need removed because they are partially in the way of where the SB perches need to be. The shock mounts are also in the wrong location, but I think there's a VERY simple solution to that. I haven't got around to trying it yet though.

10-4 That makes sense.
