I agree with CSFJ, that appears to be a Gov Loc, bummer, can't put a Detroit in it, need a whole new carrier to change it, but on the bright side, the 14B Gov locks tend to not explode like the 1/2 ton ones
you can put a Detroit if you swap the carrier though?

Your front has a SPicer marking on it, and I can see a clutch, so it's likely a power lock.

Some axles have 4.10's, some have 4.11, but CUCV's have 4.56's. So your's have been monkeyed with for sure.
any other angles I can get of the front diff to clarify this?

edit: this makes sense. the front wheels seem glued together in rotation. the inside wheel chatters/barks when turning in 4 wheel drive.

Yes, if you have a locker.

The rear goes inside a open carrier, so it's tricky to see.

For the front, I would run a Detroit there as well, and just unlock a hub if I want to run sharp offroad. Getting into ARB's or OX's doubles the cost, and any type of "posi" is just going to unload as soon as you lift a front tire.
One type of detroit locker will go into an open carrier, but they also make a locker carrier too. I don't know if they made a special carrier for the military trucks but this is what the in in the rear of mine looks like.

I was kind of surprised that this didn't more closely resemble the locker carriers as they appear on the parts sites now, but if you look inside the openings, you can still see the springs in there.

The best of the best is ARB.
The only device I want on my front diff is a locker that can be disengaged, such as the ARB.
Driving with a front locker engaged is not for the faint of heart.
Even with a strong front diff, big tires and a locker and test pilot dummy on the loud pedal WILL break ****. Like trying to back out of a hole,
all the weight on the front end, CLANK! oh what was that sound?
Despite the concerns, there is NOTHING like a 4x4 that has full power to all 4 wheels.

The craziest moment driving a locked front end for the first time is discovering that when you turn the wheels, they will not self-center afterwards. You have to center the front wheels, and better get after it the moment the truck begins to turn or you will over steer and maybe put 'er in the ditch.

Yeah, that's a gov-lock. Iirc they were designed to lock both sides after a diference in speed occured between the wheels. The Detroit locker was designed to keep both wheels locked together until the centrifugal force of the corner overpowered the springs on one side and allowed that wheel to disengage and turn at a different speed.

I have ARB's in our FJ, and they are outstanding.

My wife drives it every day and never knows the difference, and I can wheel it all weekend with the touch of a button.

However all in gears, compressor, and lockers were over 2k.

So if you're not going to seriously wheel it, I probably wouldn't bother.
