That is a NP241C transfer case (Driver side drop). Notice the wires hooked to it, they are for a VSS. That transfercase is used for 88-98 chevy trucks.
It will NOT work in these old square bodies.

I don't have any insight on the transfer case but, one thing that really grinds my gears is when people call the 90's body style a square body. And it happens more than I like it to. It may be possible the guy you got the transfer case from calls 90's chevys, squarebodies.
