OOPS! Wrong pic!
Ok I feel like a DORK!:suicide:
I'll get the good pic up.
Anybody know how to test a Gov Lock carrier? I'm looking at buying these axles off a 89 k1500 Suburban, and have no idea if the carrier is in good conditions. The 3.73 gear ratio is what I'm after, but I'm not familiar with these lockers.

I had one in my ZR2 and currently have one in my Silverado. To check if they worked I dropped the right side tires off into some loose gravel with the left side on pavement and got on it a bit. When there is 100-200 RPM difference in the 2 rear tires it will then engage. Often with a bang (in theory get on the gas easily, don't just floor it). They sometimes can blow apart if you are too rough on them. I also found if I was stuck in a ditch and the truck was at a strange angle sometimes it wouldn't want to engage. It is also supposed to then disengage at speeds above 20 mph.

They work well enough on a stock-ish vehicle. Once you get big tires and more power is often when they have problems.

Gm called them a G80. That might allow you search for more info on them.

Thinking about it more I do remember hearing of people lifting up the rear end of the truck and putting it in gear at idle. Then wearing thick gloves then stop one tire from spinning. Then it would engage and try and tear your gloves off. I never tried that method.

Thanks for that info 77. Thing is, the axles are off the burb, sitting on the ground with tires on. I want to try them on my truck, cause the 3.08's I presently got, ain't getting it done with the wide 33's.

Ah- not on a vehicle.... I did find a video. Since it has tires then lift up the axle so the tires are off the ground and try this.

They say have the trans in park. Might need to prevent the pinion from spinning then? Maybe?

That's exactly what it looks like. The housing is a regular GM 10 bolt though.
