Done fiberglass before and the main factor is your base. Would need to see a bare frame to develop a working plan, would it be challenging? Yes, cool looking? Most certainly! A square with a glossy dash would stand above the rest
Sharp. Wrinkled. Flimsy.

Wear the chainmail stripping one of these bogus dash cores.

I used black roll on bed liner to dress up the pad on my '83. It's a driver and looks much better now. It all depends on the level of the build. I couldn't justify $500 for a new pad.

Does anyone know what kind of padding, type of material and thickness, was under the original vinyl cover. If it's too thick, wouldn't it be hard to get it to fit in place? And can it be perforated on each end for the radio speakers?

It's not very thick but if you are doing it yourself I would use a close cell foam that dries hard enough to shape. It's just the very edges and it needs to very thin to fit below the seals around the window and door frames.
