I was pulling into the gas station this morning and my truck stopped moving. I shut it off messed with the shifter started it back up and it still did not move. Went to put it in park and get out but it started to roll in park. I ended up putting it in 4low to get it ome. I checked the linkage it all seems to be fine. Any ideas????

I'm confused, your details beside your post says you have a C10 which means 2WD. If it's an 86 K10 (4WD) you have an NP208 t-case. 2WD should be all the way forward and if you have a bodylift it could be causing the floor pan to knock it into neutral. First though, please confirm the year and model of the truck.

If there was no noise coming from the transfer case that would indicate damage I would be looking into why it kicked into neutral. Either the shifter had contact with the body or the linkage needs adjusted a little. I had an 83 that would kick out of 2WD when the engine would torque up and adjusting the linkage so the shifter was back a little more helped it.

I checked the linkage. It seems it is all fine no binding. I went out and messed with it again. I makes a grinding noise when putting it in park. It doesn't seem to have a 4high. But it works fine in 4low. The tranny shifts through all the gears.

All the way forward should be 2WD, next position back is 4-Hi, next back is neutral and all the way back is 4-Lo. If it's making a grinding sound that tells me the stick isn't going all the way forward into 4WD or 2WD. The trans has to be in neutral to go from neutral in the t-case to lo or hi range.

I will check that. I have tried about everything when it comes to moving the gears.

Ok, the transfer case shifts good but when I put it in 4hi or 2 wheel it has no gears and still won't lock in when in park.

It is possible a synchro or shift for has broken. You can try draining the oil through a screen, or let it run across a piece of white paper as it comes out and look for metal fragments or metal dust/sludge. It is fixable but the work/expense may be just as easily negated by installing a known good NP208.

If I go to get a different transfer case the number I found on the side is 14020891 does this sound right?

I really couldn't tell you. There should be a metal tag on it with the model number "NP208" on it. If you google some pics of 205s 203s and 208s you can see they have distinct differences. The 208 has an aluminum case and lots of "ribs" or webbing to reinforce the casing...

...and this is what the ID tag looks like...
