Timing Question

It's prob been asked before but I didn't see it after searching. My engine is a .30 over 350, stock-ish cam (no idea the size), 9-1 compression motor. Clearly the timing guide on the core support won't help since it's for the original 85 305. I just need a good starting point to keep it from sputtering while I'm setting it. A bit of research leads me to starting 6-8 deg BTDC but any thoughts would be nice. Thanks

I'd start at 8-10, then after getting everything else set, see what you can bump it to before it pings, then back it off a degree or two. Then go back and fine tune your other adjustments.

6* was stock for a 350 back in 85, set in drive with the vac advance unplugged.
