Let me ask this a different way. What is the difference in the dipstick diameter and location between the th350 and th400?

Is the th400 further back, different angle? I was thinking maybe different sides, but these photos show them on the same side.

@DoubleDingo same side , but in my view a totally different configuration. Tried using a long tube and stick 350 dipstick in a 400......did not work. I got the long tube/stick from my local Chevrolet dealer years back, not sure if they still have them?? It was the locking type with the lever at the top of the stick, wasn't too expensive......then. Seems like they always break either the top off the stick or the locating tab off the tube:emotions122:

I guess that is why the tabs are nearly 180 out on the th350 tube and the th400 tubes that I showed in the other thread.

@idahovette Was the tube diameter different where it goes into the case? Or was it the shape of the tube? If the bends are different I can see that being a problem. Makes me wish I had the means to build one and be done with it.

I don't think the dipstick tubes are different diameters. Fairly certain they interchange. Of course there is for sure 2 different styles. The O ring type and then there's the grommet type where it seals to the case. Then there's all the different lengths and the mounting tab location differences for different applications.

It's just money! Speedway is essentially the same but less $$$.

Not sure if this is helpful, I bought a aftermarket chrome dipstick a few months ago for a th350. On ebay was like 25 bucks. The 350 dipstick is most different in my opinion because it's the only one I've seen that don't use a grommet in the tranny. It just has an o-ring to seal instead. The bottom end is a different size from most the rest too. Most tubes taper down to fit in The hole with the grommet

I'll have to disagree. Most tubes DO NOT taper down to fit in a grommet. It's going to depend more on the year model of the transmission or the application it was intended for. Now most 700r4 sticks are tapered, that is true. Most year model Th400's are going to be O Ringed and I believe that's true on Th350's also. IIRC, I think I've some seen later model Th350C's (lock up converter) that run the grommet type tube, but more other older ones were O Ring type.

And remember, Th400 has been around since 1964, Th350 since 1969.
