Just had a quick questing on TH350 power handling, was planning on building a 383 this year for my 79 and was just browsing jegs and found a 383 crate engine cheaper than it'd cost me to build one, also has the option of buying a transmission with it. Real question here is would a stock 4x4 TH350 be able to hold up to 440 ft lbs or should i bite the bullet and spend the extra money to get a TH400 with the engine and find a tailshaft for a transfer case?

Tire size comes in play, but generally either a good rebuild on th350 to handle the power or th400/4l80e/sm465/nv4500/other hd trans.

Completely forgot about tire size, yeah ill probably just bite the bullet and get the 400 with the engine and regear to make up for the 35s

my th350 lasted about 8 years with a 500hp 383 with a 2500 stall converter, and a tci full kit with brown clutches, shift kit, and hardened outer race, 4.56's and 285's and i was mean to it.

it broke the outer race and made a mess, if the 400 is cheap enough go that rout and build it once, im into the 350 for about 800-1000$ to fix and build strong enough for this to not happen. if you go the 350 route id up grade to the 36 element sprag and a 700r4 low reverse support
