As the thread suggests I installed a new starter in my truck today and after firing the truck up I noticed a grinding sound. Upon further inspection I noticed the casing of the starter is rubbing against the fly wheel.

I then examined the old starter to check if i possible got shipped the wrong one and noticed the same wear on the starter casing. It seems to me that someone at some point changed out the flywheel for a larger one.

Im trying to figure out if I should simply allow the fly wheel to grind the starter casing down until it stops rubbing or if i should remove it and have a machine shop shave a gap in the starter. The flywheel doesn't look damaged from the rubbing and the starter casing is relatively soft metal.

Let me know if anyone has experienced this or what they recommend me doing.

See attached Photos.

Thanks

Maybe your flexplate (flywheel is for manual transmissions) is on backwards. Rotate the engine and see if the balance weight is on crankshaft side of the plate:

Well that's odd then. Do the mounting holes in the block look ok? Kinda wondering if the bolts sheared at some point and holes were drilled/tapped in the wrong spot.

Do you know if the trans has ever been rebuilt or removed?

Does it seem to rub all the way around or, just in a couple of places ?

Is there an excessive amount of crank thrust fore/aft?

Since its a new starter and everything function before the starter swap.Probably when the rebuilder rebuild the starter , they put a new end housing on the starter(probably a cheap Chinese replacement) and its slightly out of spec(as is too thick of casting on that end piece). A few minute of work with a file will probably cure your problem. Will qualify this if you didn't have any problem with the old starter, other than it quit working.

Rub seems consistent all the way around although I haven't laid underneath while cranking the engine. Original starter is pictured in main post above and seems to have been filed down either from the rubbing it by a machine. The starter was replaced with the oem manufacturer but with the starter for off road use aka less debris can get inside. Could this be my problem?
