It basically comes down to mileage, the 305 seems to have good enough power for my needs (besides towing). This pickup is just a daily driver and I plan on driving it until the end of time. I plan on driving it and doing weekend projects and that starts with getting her running better, and eventually passing emissions. I am all about the underdog motor.

Nothin wrong with the 305. My dad had a 79 C10 LWB we worked the piss out of. The 305 smoked a little but could haul 2 ton of scrap, or a heapin load of firewood all day long.

Sure it will. Just get a grease gun and add more grease.

Hahaha I was reffering to a human woman in that last statement.
I am probably the pet police around here. I can't stand animal abusers, and no I don't really care for cats, but that doesn't mean its OK for someone to abuse, abondoned or neglect them or any pet for that matter and if I see it being done, you can bet I notify the authorities. Hate to be a snitch, but somethings are just intolerable.

Kinda getting back to topic though. I didn't ask what your situation was on this 305 build? Are you just doing a valve job or looking for heads for an higher mileage 305 short block, or you rebuilding a 305 or what's the situation? I have a feeling you might be barking up the wrong tree all together. If just doing heads, how many miles are on this 305 psitons and rings?

What was the Vortec 305 nomenclatured as? A 5.0 Vortec? I'm just curious.

Anything 96 and up should be a vortec (as far as I know). You will also need the intake for it. Vortec heads are the best bang for your buck hands down. Power and economy. Ditching those swirl port heads is one of the best things you can do IMO.

true from what I know as well 96 and up was vortec, usually have vortec on the valve covers, and they have a saw blade kinda casting mark on the front of pass head.

I also hear that the tbi heads are good for low end torque, you had 305's and 350's tbi's as well.

Definately need an intake for vortec heads and need an aftermarket one, cheapest I've seen has been around $150 or so.

Now I aint sure, because I never done it but, I think the tbi heads will work with the stock intake if you oblong or elongate the 4 center manifolds bolt holes since they are a different angle then the old style heads.
