That is just a VW doing VW things....
Here the pin came out of the fuel pump, but it still functioned well enough I was able to drive it the 20 miles home in traffic.

On the new pump, I peened that pin in place and epoxied over both sides as well for good measure.

Broke down in downtown Portland once.
The fuel tank became plugged. I pulled the feed line and blew through it backwards until it made bubbles in the tank.
Easy peasy fix on a bridge.

I told them what I was driving when they sent out a giant truck for me.
But it worked on the morning that my throttle cable decided to snap the end off the first time.

About 10 months later it snapped the end off the stock replacement throttle cable at the same place on the way home from work.
I then found a much better bolt on throttle cable that has served us quite well in the last 10 years.

The throttle cables and clutch cables will leave you stranded every once in a while.
I learned to carry a spare of each, just in case.
I could change the clutch cable pretty quick in a parking lot if I had too.
