I have a 1981 C10 with the 250 inline 6 cylinder engine. It has a 2bbl Rochester varijet carburetor. I would like to replace it with a non varijet 2bbl. I'm looking for a carb that would bolt on to my existing manifold. Not looking for performance, just a good solid carburetor. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'd make a plate adapter and go monojet or 32/36 weber/Holley 5200 series. A plate adapter is easy to make. I've built more than my fair share of plate adapters, some complex some dirt simple. Yours looks dirt simple if you need advice on making one just ask.

Thank you for the replies. I'm kind of leaning towards the eBay varijet as it looks like it will bolt right on and I can reuse the factory air cleaner. My son stole this truck from me, he is only 8 years old and can drive the wheels off of it. We have a 350 ready to drop in but I don't want to hear the rumble as he drives around our property. Plus he is not ready for 260hp just yet.

a couple random thoughts:

well, he's got something on me,...been driving since I was 10,..on manuals though. (he might need 2 more years to get to a clutch, ...but I guess he could use a deck brush now to mash at any pedals he can't get to)

lots of carb threads here. ...from reading them: plenty of quality rebuilders out there, putting quality parts back in old OEMs. and some have racks and racks of them.
before you buy: make sure to check and trace your connections though. simple things get easily overlooked.

and something to be said for the old sixer engines. ...good on gas.

have a look around here:

We have a manual ranger he is going to learn once the engine is back in it. I did trace all the vaccuum lines and replaced them all. Ot runs a lot better however, at high rpm, under load where you approach the 1-2 or 2-3 shift ot falls flat on its face. You can let off the throttle and it comes back to life. I dig the i6 and want to run it for a while so I'm not opposed to having the original carb rebuilt. Just need something in the mean time so we can drive it more.

I can get a great deal on a 32/36 DGV, DGEV, DGAV, for Holley with electric choke. What am I looking at to make an adaptor and will my stock air cleaner fit? If it won't can you recommend an air cleaner?

Yeah, i believe it is a China bomb carburetor. It's under $100 so it would get me up and running as long as the assembler got his allotment of rice that day. I've had good luck and bad luck with these.

When I'm plate adapter I go to metal by the foot and buy an aluminum stock piece about like what I'll picture. Usually 10.00 or less. Then I buy some counter sunk allens which I'll list also. Take a Varijet base gasket set it the plate and trace it. Set a weber gasket on the plate, center the throttle bores and trace it too. Take an appropriate size hole saw and cut your throttle bores. Drill your weber pattern bolt holes 5/16ths tap drill size. Drill your varijet bolts holes,11/32nds. Now drill the same varijet holes again just deep enough and big enough for your countersink screws to set just under flush. Tap your bolt holes 5/16ths to bolt your weber down. If your metal place is like metal by the foot you can probably find a scrap real close to the diamension you need to keep your cutting to a minimum. To cut length and width, pick your poison. Jigsaw, circular saw, band saw, sawzall. Take a varijet base gasket with you. All diamensions and fasteners I gave you will need to verify. I am assuming your manifold uses 5/16ths hardware abd don't honestly know base diamensions on a Varijet. But I used to put the 2 bbl Holley/ Weber on everything. You should have under 20.00 wrapped up in materials

Well good luck with that. I've always used Holleys or Webers so I could jet them as needed and if necessary. Let 7s know how it works out. I probably need to do a Mazda B2200 in the near future and don't know if I have any build able cores left.
