Not really sure where else to check this, so any help would be appreciated. I have an 84 K10 Custom Deluxe, 305 with HD 4 speed manual. I want to upgrade to 3.73 gears. I have a nice used set that came out of my 96 Impala SS, which is also an 8.5" (8.6" on the box, IDK why) 10 bolt. Will these gears fit in the rear of my 84 K10?

Thanks in advance,
Jonathan

I don't know, but I assume 3.08's. The later model 8.5's like my Impala don't have the "carrier" breaks. I remember that from my 60's 10 bolts and 12 bolts and having to match a gear set to a "series 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 carrier." I can use any gear from a 2.56 to a 4.56 on the diff/carrier in the Impala.

If the 84 K10 10 bolt requires carrier matching, these gears likely won't work, but trying to find a way to confirm.

Ive NEVER heard of a universal carrier, My truck, monte, and chevelle all have carrier breaks. normally 3.08 and down is 2, and 3.23 up is 3. Now my chevelle has factory 2.56 Posi, which is its own carrier.

I know my truck 12bolt is different in comparrisen to a gm car 12bolt.
I would have to say no, but hey mabey someone else will chime in.

It was odd to me as well. When I bought a new diff/posi and set of gears for the car, I asked about carrier size as I would likely want to change gear ratio at a later date. I was told "there is no carrier sizing for this version rearend." Maybe I was told wrong or heard wrong. I just don't know, which is why I asked.
