Look at the sticker in the glove box or in the left inner fender (if it's still there). Or look up the numbers that are faintly stamped into the forward face of the passenger side axle tube. Or pull the diff cover and look at the numbers stamped into the ring gear.

Says it is the standard ratio. But the "standard" ratio varies with other equipment, so that's not much help. Standard for your truck was likely 3.08 or 2.73 ratio. My '84 was basically optioned the same (no sticker though) and it came with a crappy 2.56 ratio, but I would have to guess it was an optional "economy" ratio. But that's just my assumption.

Why did they tell you it looked like the axle was changed? That pic shows no evidence.

You say this with hard evidence ...so is this the case ?. Still gonna pull and look need to change gear oil anywho

100%. But yours could have been changed out at some point, it is 30 years old after all.

That would be a good idea. It might have 30 year old oil in it. Just count the number of teeth on the ring and pinion gears and divide the ring gear number by the pinon number. Ring divided by pinion equals ratio.
