Hello,

I just bought a 1982 Chevy k10 from my brother. I know next to nothing about these trucks, I just liked the way it looked.

I haven't driven it, but my brother stated that there is a noise coming from the transmission and that it may be the torque converter pump? A mechanic quoted him $950 to change out the torque converter and transmission pump or $1200-$1300 to rebuild the entire transmission.

I do not know what type of transmission it currently has, nor do I know how to check to see which one the truck has. My brother does not know either as he has received the truck through a trade a few months ago.

Please advise on what I should do about the transmission issue. The truck has 38 in tires and I want to make sure the transmission will be able to handle the stress of those tires.

I am not sure how to post pictures. I would definitely like to post some of the truck for you.

I have a few thoughts. First, how certain is the location of the noise? A faulty transmission pump is always gonna wine in park or neutral because the pump is always turning. Is there hard shifting? I'd check the fluid just to be safe. I'd also check your wheel bearings. Last thing that comes to mind is the water pump because it'll make noise sometimes at the end of its life, but it's not likely in my mind. Those tires look like they make a lot of noise. I'm not saying you didn't think of that, but I have 31 inch all terrains on my Jimmy, and those make plenty of noise going down the highway.

It does wine on park. I haven't driven it yet and my brother did not mention hard shifting. Just the whining sound.

Okay. That's different. Check the fluid level at full warm up. If it's okay and still whining, if it were me, I'd replace the pump. That's granted the shifting is nice and smooth, and there's not slipping and banging. If it is doing all that, the pump might have been bad for too long, and it's best to rebuild it.

What would be a reasonable price for a mechanic to replace the pump?

The problem is that it does not take long to install a new set of clutches once you get the pump off. Verify what trans you have(trans pan picture would work) and give some info on engine, axle gears and intended use. If keeping long term, might be beneficial to build it now instead of replacing pump only.
As for price, i would think in $300-$500 range.
