Hello all, I'm really happy to have found this forum which focuses specifically on third generation C/K trucks. I purchased a complete but shot 1981 2500 last April and have slowly been trudging through a complete frame off restoration. I've secured a clean replacement frame and replaced all suspension components with new. The 454 block, heads and crank have just returned from the machine shop (.030 over) and ready for reassembly. My intensions are to rebuild the truck as close to stock as possible and will undoubtedly need to tap into the wealth of knowledge here on Squarebody. As a starter question, would anyone be able to supply me with the correct paint treatment on the motor. I believe the engine itself was still painted GM orange in '81 and all accessories e.g. air cleaner, brackets, etc. were matt black but wanted to be sure before I start painting.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum. I always thought the engines were the corporate blue or black by the '80s.

Hi and thanks, I also thought they (engine block) had changed over to black by '81 but my machinist claims otherwise...hence my query.

Howdy!

The engines went to corporate blue in '77. Sometime in the early 80's it went to black, I think '84 was the first year for that. Maybe sometime in '83. Brackets should be semi-gloss black.
