Hi all,

I need a refresher, I am installing the front cover on my sbc, the lower rubber gasket between the oil pan and the cover wont squeeze into place with the oil pan all bolted in place. It seems I need to drop the front of the oil pan a little bit to get that rubber seal in place, is this correct? can one break the seal and re-torque without worrying about leakage?

Then I am wondering if I need to drop the pan all together and install fresh gaskets on this piece. Its a 78 GMC 1500, will the oil pan come out without jacking the engine up?

Thanks

Dave

Correct the front of the pan has to drop a little, but may leak without a little silicone especially in the corners.

And yes the oil pan will come off without needing to jack up the motor. While you have it off you may want to get those nice neoprene rubber gaskets. Just be sure to silicone the corners at the rounded part front & rear.

This would be so much easier on an engine stand.

At least you dont have to shove 18" of snow out of the way to do the job. I KNOW what that is like!

I cannot imagine having to work on a rig with 18" of snow on the ground, the cold alone would kick my ass.

We're lucky up here in the Puget Sound, very mild winters compared to a lot of places.
