Name that noise....

Ok, I've got an interesting noise of some sort that has started in my Grand Prix and I'm not sure what it is or even the best way to describe it. The only time that I can get the noise to occur is when I'm going up a hill with the RPMS at 2500. I can KINDA get it to do it 1800 up a hill but it's more prevalent at 2500. If the RPMS are higher or lower than that then the noise goes away and I cannot get it to happen if I'm just sitting in the driveway and revving it up to 2500 RPM. It only happens when driving up a hill at this point. The noise sounds like a grinding of some sort but I'm not sure if that's the proper way to describe it or not.

Any ideas on this? I'm stumped since I can't just recreate it on a whim and that the conditions have to be going up a hill at 2500 RPMS. My thought is to just let it continue until something breaks but I thought I'd ask you all first

Still a vauge descrition. Grinding? Yikes! You got to have a feel what area the noise is coming from don;t you? The first thing that popped into my head was possibly a heat shield somewhere vibrating until I got to the "grinding" part. I know I had a real pain in the ass tinny vibration noise on my Burb for the 2 years I woned it only under load around 1/3 throttle and I finally found out it was the spark plug heat shield on the l/f ehaust manifold.

When your car does that noies can you feel anything in the wheel or shifter?

Yeah it is kinda vague but that's the best I can do since I can't just recreate it in my driveway

No there is no vibration in the wheel or shifter.

My guess would be, when you go up hill, the mice fall to the back of their wheel, putting more strain on the wheel spindle bearings. It must might be time to upgrade to a wind up rubber band system.

Old, can you tell the speed of the noise? Like axle or motor speed?

It seems to be at motor speed but since it only happens at 2500 rpm and going up a hill it's hard to tell. If I raise the rpm it goes away and if I lower the rpm it goes away.... baffling.....I'll keep listening for it to see if there is more info I can get to you.

Whats strange about this is going up hill. So it would likely mean something is shifting or moving huh? You'd think anyway. So my first guess would be to check your motor and trans mounts, or even your front motor stabilizer strut. This would also maybe make sense in the higher rpm, as added torque to the problem. They may even "look" good, but as they wear and get older, they can get a bit more flexible than they are supposed to be. So there !!! You happy now???? That's my guess !!! And keep those Gerbils outta your ...... J/K of course.
