Afternoon guys,

Haven't been on here in awhile. I've come across an engine for possible upgrade from my 76 Smogger. I found a Vortec Headed Volvo Penta 5.7GS. It was a 2 barrel carb engine with hole for mechanical fuel pump. The gentleman had it freshened up and engined up selling the boat. Basically I need to purchase the vortec intake/swap accessories onto it and go. The cam is the GMPP 14097395 with 431/.451 lift 196/206 duration. From what I understand this engine should be a big improvement over my stock engine. What would the power be on this engine? Secondly would this engine work well with my stock TH350 and 3.07 gears? Long term is hopefully a 700r4 and 3.42 upgrade. I can get this engine for less than me building one.

I believe that would work very well for your application. I'd guess the realistic HP rating of 325+. I am not an engine builder mind you, but I comfortably guessed that figure based on an engine I have. It has a little hotter of a cam and possibly more compression, but the dyno sheet shows 391 hp or somewhere around in there.

If its the starboard engine it will run reverse rotation, that will be hard to overcome..

Most marinized old 350s from the carb era, early 90s and older, if 2bbl were probably about 225-240hp.
Curiously I would question that engine came with Vortex heads as it sounds older than the vortec era. But marine companies do have different applications.
Regardless it should be a good bit stouter than an old, presumably worn, smogger 170hp or whatever they were in their prime.

Here's a pic of the engine. Definitely vortec. Also would add probably the hooker y manifolds instead of regular headers.

This is a quick google.

The Volvo Penta 5.7GS is a robust 5.7-liter (350 cubic inch) V-8 gasoline sterndrive engine based on the GM Vortec small block, widely used in marine applications during the 1990s. It typically produces 300hp, features a cast-iron block for durability, and is known for reliability in cruising, often paired with SX or DP drives.

Seems like a good option for a upgrade candidate.

I ran a parasail boat for years that had a turbo volvo penta diesel. Beast of a motor.

Sorry for the holley 2bbl comment. I assumed it had a 2bbl manifold on it already.

Vortec carb intakes are not that bad price wise.
