Hey. I just picked up a 1977 Chevy C20 with a 454 and an automatic trans. I'm really interested in putting a manual tranny in the truck. I was wondering if anyone knows which would be best fit and the difficulty of doing the change. Thanks!!

a sm465 would be almost a direct swap but a nv4500 is soooo much better but alittle more challenging to install

I have an small in my truck. 1st gear is useless and it shifts like an old dump truck. It's also 200+ lbs. I would go with the nv4500. The issue with it is it has electronic speedo so you'll have to a dress that.

How do you reconcile the electronic speedo?

I'm confused by this. If by "small" you mean SM465 it doesn't weigh anywhere near 200+lbs. Maybe if you have the transfer case attached.

You can get electronic to cable speedo conversions.

The sm465 is about 150+lbs. The other option is np440. It's a 4 speed but 4th is an overdrive. And it uses speedo cable.
