New to this forum and not too knowledgeable when it comes to mechanics, but I love this trucks. i have owned two and i am looking for my third. Question: found one 87, the owner says that it has a factory 350 tbi with a 700r4 but I don’t know if 87 had 350 tbi or 700s. Can someone help to see if it is true? Would the vin tell me if it came with that from factory. Where can I find out any info on figuring this out? Thanks for the help.

Yes sir. 1987 was the only year - as far as i know - you could get a TBI/OD in a square pickup other than 1988-91 crew cabs (and some 1988 3500 cab/chassis if you want to get technical.)

VIN should have a K for the engine code.

The SPID label in the glove box, assuming it's still there, should also tell you what the engine/trans combo would be.

thanks for the quick reply. the sticker, is it going to tell me by name or by code. if the sticker is not there, what else could tell me engine/trans it came with? is this a good combo for DD?

I'm not sure about what the sticker is in 1987...Whether it's written out or just a code.

Other than that, just a careful examination will tell you if it's original to the truck. Like the VIN stampings.

The 700r4 has its weak points but the GM TBI is pretty reliable, if slow unless built right and a reasonably good choice for a DD.

Look inside the glovebox door, and there should be a build sheet of RPO codes. If it says L05 on there, then it's the 350tbi. MD8 or MX0 indicate a 700r4. See the rest of the RPO descriptions here http://www.73-87.com/7387info/7387rpo1.htm

LMC catologes have how to interpet your vin number. I believe it will tell you all the information you are looking for. I have a 1987 1/2 ton 4x4 with 350/Tbi, 700r4 transmission.

Did you know in 88 the v3500 came with a carburetor factory? Also in 89 they still made a r3500 cab and chassis with a 350 tbi standard cab?
