On my personal vehicles I always change the oil every 3k - religiously!!! Even when running synthetic - it's just ultra cheap insurance & good preventative maintenance. On the wife's '10 Caddy SRX we do it at 5k as recommended & it's synthetic from the factory. My Son's '02 VW Beetle has all Amsoil fluids & we still do it at 3k.

you know my rule of thumb is if you cant read the add line the oil is dirty and needs to be changed simple!

I sure couldn't go by that. My motors are so clean, I have golden oil still at 5,000 miles when I change it. I have about 8K on the box van with full synthetic and Mobil 1 filter, and its still golden. That's a 173,000 mile motor too. Usually a real good sign you change your oil often enough, and that your rings are in good shape.

That wont work on synthetic oil cause synthetic oil will actually clean your engine internally and good for 7,500 miles before the next oil change.

I'm not so sure about that. To many things come into play. I can assure you I can find a motor and pour any Synthetic oil into it, and have it black in 500 miles miles and it only get blacker from there on out. All motor oils, unless specified have detergents in them to break away sludge, varnish and grime to an extent, even conventional motor oil. If a motor is dirty inside, or has blow by in the rings, it going to turn any motor oil black.
My motors just happen to be in good shape, kept clean, and not neglected.

run mobil 1 on all three trucks, probably only get 5 thousand a yr on each of them so i do them all of them the first week of january, even thought the mileage is on the short side they still draw moisture so get it out of there, cheaper than buying a motor

I'm like you towman, but helllll NO am I changing oil in January. I do like March or April when its warmer. Last time I did them it was in May, so its time. I just looked, I've got 5700 miles on my DD oil. I oughta take a pic of the dipstick and you can see what 5700 mile oil looks like.

Here is my dipstick at 5700 miles on the oil. Its not low, I just wiped it on my finger gonna take a pic of it that way too, but it doesn't show up. Also was taken in the dark, so all the light is from the flash and why the glare off the stick. Other guys I work with, take my oil and run it in their oil burners since its so clean. Its saves them from buying $2.50 a qt cheap oil just to burn 2 qts a week.

BTW, this is Convential 10w-30 and a Purolater Pure One Filter. Nothing fancy really. Usually I'd change this at 5000. The box van I run Full Synthetic with a Mobil 1 filter and change it every 10,000 and its just as clean as this. If I had to guess, this motor has 45,000-50,000 on it.
