So I finally found an 83 K1500 like my dad had when I was a kid that I've always wanted. I purchased the truck in California and drove it home to South Carolina without any major issues. I do have a few things I need to work on that I'm sure I'll find info on here so thanks in advance.

Something I know for sure I'll need help on is removing the non-essential CA-specific emissions-related stuff. My goal is to remove only the stuff that is necessary to be able to install an aftermarket exhaust (to include a set of headers) and any other items that have no significant positive impact on reducing emissions but have a noticeable negative impact on engine performance. Any help on this is extremely appreciated.

Howdy!

None of the emissions stuff is hurting it if it's running well. Some of it just tends to get in the way of other work that might get done. For installing headers, you really only need to lose the smog pump and lines.

That sounds easy! What all does the smog pump do? Thanks for the advice.

It was! This thing guzzled about a $1K in gas along the way too. Although I was glad to have been driving the truck when I-40 traffic was locked up for hours and I was able to drive off the interstate, through a field, and onto a side road. That was awesome. I uploaded a picture to my profile I'm not sure why it's not showing up...

It just pumps fresh air into the exhaust. It's snake oil basically and does no harm to remove it.
