2 purposes of this thread. Now that I have my truck back id like to swap in a 700r4 in place of the 400. I just really want that overdrive and I figure I can pull that boat in 3rd. Overdrive would be nice for every other time. I know it has 4.10s but thats another story.

I read the thread on how to identify a 700r and looking at this one I aquired I see it has no rainbow, no serial number cause its been grinded off, but it does have the pressure taps which I think indicate an early 89 or pre 89 right? It has a sticker saying pretty much its a rebuilt gm trans and it does have a serial number on the other side on a plate. Ill post the pics up and maybe yall can help. I plan on bringing it to our trusted trans place and having them go thru it for me this week.

Second, what all do I need to change to fit this trans in my c20? I havent had time to get under there yet. Will the driveshaft need to be shortened or lengthened? Speedo and kick down cable work? What about the little 4 prong square female plug on it?

Any tips would be awesome. Thanks!

Crickets crickets....

Dropped the 700r4 off today, guy is supposed to go thru it and contact me on what it needs. Hes a pretty reputable shop.

Someone told me I may need to actually lengthen the driveshaft not shorten. Any takers on what all needs to be done here?

What did you end up doing on the 700 swap? I have one sitting around and the 3 speed 400 with 4:10's is killing me.

im doing a 4l60e swap in my truck now. im having a heck of a time finding a driveshaft the right length. i found a one piece at a bone yard, but its still about 4 inches short, most likely going to find someone to cut lengthen, and balance it and run that one. if you have a 2 piece shaft, youl need just the front section for either a 700r4. being down south im sure you can find one in a bone yard. for me up north not so easy to come by. good luck.
