New to the page and dumb...now that that is out of the way....I have a sm465, not hyd., that I can't get into gear while running. truck is new to me and has sat for years but fired right up, miraculously. Found the clutch adjustment bolt missing so I replaced it. with a few adjustments from 3" of play to no play, it still just grinds as if not disengaging. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

I may be wrong, but I think the older 465 is non syncro. If so, going to have to learn to double clutch and match rpms.

I actually cannot get it into any gear at all while running. I’ve revved it some searching for the sweet spot too. With engine off all shifts smooth. I have read that low and R are non synchro and can have some grinding but I’m talking about nothing but grinding and all kinds of pressure on shifter and different RPMs. In other words I have never been able to move the truck under its own power.

What would happen if you put it into second, depressed the clutch and brake, then tried starting it? Does it want to move forward when cranking?

Seems like a clutch issue if it won’t shift into any gear when running.

May be the pilot bushing and input shaft have "married" together. I experienced the can't go into gear issue after pulling my tranny that worked just fine prior to pulling it, and not doing anything to it but clean it up. After pulling it back and painting a little white lithium grease on the nipple of the input shaft and reinstalling it, I could then shift into gears again.

I think all SM465's are synchromesh except for reverse and 1st. I know my SM420 is like that.

May not hurt to use some 600 or 1000 grit sandpaper to clean up the nipple of the input shaft before painting on the lithium grease too.

Are you saying it will grind even if you try putting it in second or third gear? Or just low?
I just reread the thread. I missed the part where you cant get into any gear. Sorry

Has to be a clutch issue. Odds are your transmission is fine. Clutch just isnt working properly.

If you have a helper, watch underneath while the clutch is pushed in to make sure everything is tight there. If that all checks out, you have to pull the transmission and fix the issues. No other way.

If I remember correctly, there is a 'collar' that is bolted to the front of the tranny. It holds the front bearing in and provides a surface for the throwout bearing to ride on.

If the tranny mounts fail this will cause an alignment issue that will cause the throwout bearing to eat into this collar. Hence a problem similar to yours.

You HAVE to pull the tranny to get to it though. You may be able to see it if you have an inspection plate that you can remove.
