Gentlemen, found this engine but the owner wasn't sure what it is. It's definitely a 4-53 Detroit. Question is, what is it worth if it is a new or GOV rebuild? Apparently it was found in a warehouse clean out. I know the Detroit diesel isn't a very popular topic here but I figured someone would know it's value.

Oh I know what rebuilders get for them, it's 9K +, but a professionally rebuilt Detroit will out live me.

It depends on if you have a use for one, a 4-53 is not a very popular engine anymore.

Had a chat with the owner this morning. It's covered in Cosmoline, so it's safe to say it's either new or a Government rebuild. It would be going in my military K30, with an NV
4500 and either a Gear Vendors or a two speed Brownie.

Given the choice between rebuilding a Detroit or scrapping, I would scrap. Given what you found and your plans, it is about what you are willing to pay. Most Detroit off road equip has been changed over to juan deere, or perkins for a reason.

No idea what it's worth, but I'd be investing in plenty of soundproofing.

They simply sound badass. That's a good enough reason to like them.

And the ensuing cloud of soot with every upshift discourages tailgating. LMAO!

Those two stroke diesels are the best sounding engines. I'd love to get my hands on one too. I love going to the truck shows and watching everyone drive in. You can pick out those two stroke Detroits long before the truck is in sight.

I know, there aren't any around here. I can't wait to get started on the swap.

Rebuild or scrap is from the perspective of expensive if you blow a cylinder or have a bottom end failure. That motor you found is a unicorn. It is worth what you are wig to pay.

I think its super cool.

Amongst looking for things to put in a big heavy truck with 5 ton axles (my k5), I considered a Detroit 8v92ta, but it's sheer size and weight about kills it lol
