Well ....
Been wanting to get back to doing bodywork, would love to shoot color on the firewall ..

Needing to pull the 406ci Mouse Motor so I'll have room for swinging the paint gun ..

Once color is laid down will be able to start in on running the wires, hanging the brake booster installing the A/C unit and solid mount the steering column ..

( That should keep me busy for awhile )

Got alot going though the wall, effort to do a clean job is in mind .. Came up with a cool cover to run all the wiring though ...

The hole with the rubber grommet in it is for the speedometer cable ... I'm keeping the og IH speedo head on line ..

Did give some thought to upgrading but vetoed the idea cause I liked the originals better ..

Installed LED's

( I'm more than sure that 80 mph is attainable, not so sure if 160 is within reach and really don't want to find out )

That hole will soon be filled up with wires and hoses, if need be can elongate the hole, I did leave room for doing just that ..

Having the crank balance at a friend shop ..

Doing a external job on it, would love to do a internal job to it but the cost of heavy metal is not in my budget !!

This is a drop it off, wait a few day then go pick it up job ..

Or would have been, my Bubby is recovering from surgery and won't be able to work for a month ..
It's going well for him, he said they fixed the problem and he just needs to heal up ..

Told him I can wait, no biggie on my end.
Also told him to take it easy and watch a lot of the old reruns of 'I Love Lucy' shows ...

If that won't heal ya up, nothing will ...

Starter has been rebuilt with replacing the brushes, new bushings, solenoid, cleaning up the armature and running down the checks ..
The starter was on the 400 SBC motor and was working good, but since it was in my greasy hands thought was to freshen it up for round 2 ..

Still had a lot of life left in it ..

Here's a upgrade for the starter that's completely not needed .. But, GM offered a cast iron starter housing on 1966 to 72 big blocks ..

The aluminum nose that's on my starter is in fine shape and most likely wouldn't cause a problem on the 500 ci big block, really should leave well enough alone ..
But, I'm going to hunt down the cast iron nose for sh*ts & giggles !!

Anyone holding ??

72 year old truck had a spot of rust behind a panel ..

Made up a patch and welded it in ..

Had to cut part of the cab up in order to get to the rust ..

Saved that piece to weld back in ..
Not going to do a wham bam job on putting the piece back in cause where it's at can't be seen ..

Didn't have much Sin to hide ..
Since it's behind the fender not going to brother with blocking the panel ...

It'll be flat enough for color ..

Next to do is pulling the mouse motor out so I can shoot color on the firewall ..

Back on the run stand stroker motor ..
Dealing with a few problems that seems to be parts at fault ...

One is the starter gear mesh being way out in left field ..
New Pioneer 168T flywheel and Jegs mini starter are not playing well together ..
Turns about one turn and then start grinding !!
Way to much room between the flywheel ring gear and bendix gear ...

My thought was perhaps the Jeg's starter was made incorrectly ?
Tried a known good GM starter that's been on my truck for years on end without any problems working..
Did the same thing as the Jeg's did ...

Have on hand a starter that came from a BBC boat motor, it too did the same as the other two starters ..
I'm beginning to think that the flywheel ring gear is made to small ??

I really don't want to change out the flywheel to another one cause it's been balanced .. Some meat been removed from the balance pad ..

Been thinking about milling .200" off the Jeg's starter ..
See if that will allow deeper engagement ?
If to much can always add shims

I did that to a Powermaster? starter on Kooper's s10. Wasn't close enough to the flywheel, so we took the mounting block off and machined somewhere around .125 to .200 off that aluminum block and it worked perfectly. And you are right, too much and then just shim it..

Cast iron nose showed up today ..

Thoughts was I could use the parts that came from the aluminum nose starter ..
Nope, wasn't going to be that lucky ..
The bendix shift lever forks are different ..

Found a starter fork from a 1958 283" and figured to give it a shot ..

It worked ..

Now to nail down some starter bolts ..
The ARP's that the aluminum nose uses are too long ..
Next order to Summit will have them on it ..
Could cut em down, but would be losing the locator on the end of them ..

Netted one Heavy-Duty, Hot-Rod old school GM direct drive starter ..

The Field Case Rubber Grommet in the starter seen better days .. Wanted to replace it with a new one .

Called a bunch of Auto stores that turned out to be a waste of time, did find it on eBay ..

Ad said that it was a vintage item ..
(Suddenly, I'm feeling very old)

Cool Beans ...

Found one in Ocala at a starter/alternator rebuild shop for a buck fifty ...
Be a 10 mile road trip for me ..
Sure would speed up the rebuild of the starter a lot ..
Think I'll do the drive and go after the critter ..
eBay's price is $17 for two ..

Got a item that I ordered from evil bay that I don't really need is a Nos bendix shift lever.

The lever that I pulled from the 58 starter has a bit of ware on it, wouldn't cause a problem using it, but new is new .

!! Great Scott !!

Hunting down the rubber grommet turned into a adventure ...

You must be registered for see images attach

Google maps had me running down every backstreet known to man .. But I did finally find the shop ..

As soon as the eBay lever shows up, starter is done ..

The fork from the 58 starter wasn't in all that bad of shape ..

A new one won't hurt a thing ..

Hopefully it'll work as good as day one ..
I did a test spin, seems to be working as it should ..
The real test will come when it's bolted to the motor ..

Got some spare parts now ...
Think I have enough parts to build another ..

That aluminum nose starter served me well for many a year ..
