I have a 1980 K10 with a 350 in it. Today I was replacing the valve cover gaskets (they were both leaking pretty bad) and was surprised that they were painted black and had a Mr. Goodwrench sticker on them. I thought these engines were blue as my 79 Suburban is.

Do I have a replacement crate motor in this thing??? by the way the rockers were spotless with no sludge build up. I guess someone must have had regular oil changes.

Well maybe if the whole engine is black. Or someone may have swapped valve covers for what ever reason.

Could very well be an old crate 350, you are correct that the original engine would have been blue.

Black color is a crate engine replacement. Mr. Goodwrench was the 350/260 hp low-compression base crate engine, #10067353. All other crate engines were GM Performance. Since the re-organization last year, I think all crate engines are now Chevrolet Performance, including 10067353. Not sure if it retains the Mr. Goodwrench sticker or not.

That all applies to the valve covers at least. If the engine is also black, it's not unreasonable to assume that they all came together and it's the 10067353.

BTW, if you want to know for sure, post the engine ID number from the front location in the pic. It's probably under your alternator or AC compressor.
