It’s in reference to the Ram branding.

Dodge had used Ram hood ornaments back in the 30s to 50s, but for the 1981 model year is when they began being badged as a Ram pickup.

1980 they began referring to them as Ram tough, but no Ram badging:

But 1981 is when they began wearing the name Ram on the trucks:

Most people leave out the Ram part of X gen Dodge Ram.

1981-93 first gens still used the old D/W codes, like C/K. 1994-02 second gens began using chassis codes, BR/BE. However that isn’t in reference to two or four wheel drive, a BR is a single cab, BE is an extended cab. Or in proper lingo, club cab or quad cab.

People would probably look at me funny if I said my BE Dodge instead of 2nd gen.

So if the "Ram" model name is the determining factor, why are the 4th gens called a 4th gen? "Ram" is now the "manufacturer" instead of the model.

It would make a lot more sense, imho, if they were just referred to by silly/stupid nicknames like the Chevy and Fords.

For instance, the 70's and 80's could all be "squarebody". The 2nd gen could be something like "freightliner nose" or something. 3rd could be "roundbody", etc.

Also with the current gen naming thing, it's as if Ram owners don't give a rat's ass that Dodge trucks existed before the 80's. Which I guess is possibly largely true, with the amount of Dodge/Ram owners that say they drive a 19xx/2xxx Cummins.

Alot of people also use the "gen" thing in reference just to the Cummins trucks, but it's still the same generation of trucks by happenstance

Then there’s those of us, like me that just say dodge or dodge ram.

You're putting too much thought into it lol. Most of the 4th gen+ guys don't have 2 brain cells to rub together lol

I was once with my buddy at a local glass shop, picking up a work truck. While we were in there, I told him he should price a new windshield for his truck while we were there. When the shop owner asked him what kind of truck, my buddy replied "it's an '05 Cummins". I then looked my buddy in the face and said "you're a focking idiot" lol.

My Dodge 3500. When I go to the parts store and the people behind the counter ask what size engine I get a wtf look because I say it’s got the 408 cubic inch six cylinder.

I wouldn’t admit to being an 06 Powerstroke guy. Ford made a huge mistake ditching the DT444e. It became a HP shootout for diesels in the early 2000s, and the 7.3 was not a race engine in stock tune.

Cummins is the GOAT in light duty trucks and we all know it.
