It’s in reference to the Ram branding.
Dodge had used Ram hood ornaments back in the 30s to 50s, but for the 1981 model year is when they began being badged as a Ram pickup.
1980 they began referring to them as Ram tough, but no Ram badging:

But 1981 is when they began wearing the name Ram on the trucks:

Most people leave out the Ram part of X gen Dodge Ram.
1981-93 first gens still used the old D/W codes, like C/K. 1994-02 second gens began using chassis codes, BR/BE. However that isn’t in reference to two or four wheel drive, a BR is a single cab, BE is an extended cab. Or in proper lingo, club cab or quad cab.
People would probably look at me funny if I said my BE Dodge instead of 2nd gen.
So if the "Ram" model name is the determining factor, why are the 4th gens called a 4th gen? "Ram" is now the "manufacturer" instead of the model.
It would make a lot more sense, imho, if they were just referred to by silly/stupid nicknames like the Chevy and Fords.
For instance, the 70's and 80's could all be "squarebody". The 2nd gen could be something like "freightliner nose" or something. 3rd could be "roundbody", etc.
Also with the current gen naming thing, it's as if Ram owners don't give a rat's ass that Dodge trucks existed before the 80's. Which I guess is possibly largely true, with the amount of Dodge/Ram owners that say they drive a 19xx/2xxx Cummins.
