Id like to swap my gears and the open diff on my 82 c10. What would be a good ratio to go behind my th350?

I have 28.7" tall tires (stock 2010ish camaro 20" wheels/tires) and the rear gearing is currently 2.73s. The truck will be a weekend driver, and will maybe see the strip every other weekend. My brother in law suggested 3.73s max but wasn't sure with the size tire that I have. Is there a gearing graph chart for the turbo 350?

On the diff. I am currently running a Detroit Trutrac in my 06 Ram 4.7L and I really like it. Has the Trutrac been a winner in the 10 bolts? Or do you guys suggest something else? Do the trucks have 28 or 30 spline axles?

Thanks

This gear ratio calculator can help you figure speeds at shift points, max speed, etc. Just leave the transfer case section and doubler section blank, skip over the low range info and concentrate on the engine rpm and speed charts. There's a left and right column if you wanted to compare 3.42 and 3.73s, etc.

If highway driving is common, 3.08 or 3.23 would be better suites. Just play with the gear calculator as mentioned above and see what rpms you are comfartable with.

Thanks guys and thanks for that conversion chart. I think I'll like 3.73s. I don't plan to keep it over 55 for too long. I just want to make it a little more fun to drive.

Would the Detroit trutrac be a good candidate or do you guys recommend something else?

Depends on how much horsepower is being applied. You may want a full carrier locker if you're running greater than 400 hp. Yukon Gear makes some good stuff.

I believe the TruTrac is a full carrier design. Never run one myself, but never heard anyone complain about one either.

I don't have any idea what kind of power I'm pushing. It's a 350 bored .030 with camel hump heads?, 284H Crane energizer cam, Performer Eps intake, and a holley clone carb (Summit brand). Everything else is factory spec. If I had to guess maybe 300 if that.

I went from 3.07's/open to 3.73/True-Trac, and it's great. Cruising at 60mph is about 3000 (I think the tach reads high).

You shouldn't have too much power for the True-Trac. I have roughly the same cam (231°@050, 108LSA), probably about the same compression (10.9:1) and it's dandy. Your cam will be much happier.

I actually didn't lose ANY mileage after the gear swap. I think because the cam is actually working with the 3.73s, vs. loping along inefficiently with the 3.07's.

The True_Trac is full carrier, and should be perfect for your application with 3.73's.
