What I was told, about why the '77s got the yellow trim paint stripes, is that it was in commemoration of GM's 50th anniversary.
However I can also see the possibility of a plant or assembly line running out of the correct trim and replacing it with the black stripe trim if that's what was currently available or on hand. I remember seeing new vehicles on the dealership lot with incorrect trim parts, back in the 70s when visiting them with my folks.
And then again, all these many years later, is a LOT of time for these trucks to get "incorrect" repairs or customization. Hell, my Dad was doing custom things to the '75 Sierra Classic right after he got it.... Headlight doors/bezels, door handles, cab headband, all got or were gonna get the black traded for Willoway Green. He was going to pull and paint the side trim when the truck got wrecked.... this logo delete on the cab headband was a mod I have never seen anyone else do on a square body truck. He used the Chevy corners as the emblem was smaller than the GMC and was easier to grind away....
Never did get to talk to the current owner about this truck, but it's got to at least have parts of his truck.....
