Carb recommendation 1974 Cheyenne 454CI

New here! Just wondering what you all have had good luck with when replacing the original carb (rochester I believe) with aftermarket Edelbrock, Holley etc...

Can you provide part# or link? I seem to be having difficulty landing on the exact carb for my application using vehicle lookup on certain supplier sites.

Can you tell me why you prefer the carb that you suggest to me?

Q-Jet! Either rebuild the factory carb CORRECTLY (including the worn out throttle shaft bores) or get one done by a specialist.

Do you drive this daily?

If so, quadrajet. Only upgrade I'd make is electric choke over hot air. There's a reason GM chose those carbs (and yours lasted fifty years.)

While I ran a q-jet for years, it was more of a mystery to me. I have had Hollies on almost every engine I run, highly tunable, I ran a 750 on my 454, ran great, and while it did take some tome to dial it in, in was instant gratification withn the peddle to the metal. This is my new carb for the 489, quick fuel, and the 750 Holley

The Edelbrock AVS-2 (not the old 1406) get a lot of positive reviews for a simple replacement carburetor. Like many Edelbrocks they are set up for economy and tend to run a little lean out of the box, but the throttle responsiveness seems to be quite good. Holley is usually more tunable, but I don't know how much you want to learn about the subject.

One challenge with the Edelbrock and Holley carbs is that they are square bore, so a stock Quadrajet intake manifold has to be adapted. There are simple bolt-on adapters, and aftermarket throttle brackets that work fine, but it adds cost to the swap. Due to the design of Edelbrock fuel feed (and maybe Holley), you may also have difficulty with a stock air cleaner working unless you install a spacer.

I had success with National Carburetors. I bolted it on, adjusted the idle, and it runs great.

As others have stated, the only other thing I did was add the electric choke.

I too bought one new in later 70s for my 71 Camaro 350, think it ran me more than that. Loved it, only diff was it had mechanical secondaries and no electric choke. Was an older List 6210 model. New ones today are plug and play and have electric chokes.
