Can the 487 heads be considered "smog era"? Without looking it up, I think they were produced in '70-'72, and maybe '69 too. The last set I had were cast in '71 from what I remember.

SBC head casting numbers are something that has slipped my mind. Ever since the vortec head craze, nobody really cares about the older castings anymore.

IIRC, smog heads didn't start until '73.

I like the aluminum heads from Summit tho.

The one I have is a 71 casting I believe, I used the term 'smog era' more since they are big chambers (75cc) as opposed to the smaller chambers of the double hump heads and such.

I like where this is "headed". ;)

Then you might like to hear this- I decided to go with the Summit SUM-152123 iron heads. 72cc chambers, 165cc intake ports, 2.02/1.60 valves.

Here is a list of everything I purchased so far for this hop up:
-Edelbrock 2101 manifold
-Summit 72cc iron heads
-Howards CL112561-12 cam and lifters
-Howards double roller timing set
-Carter fuel pump
-Harmonic balancer
I am sure the list will grow a little bit more but that is where I am at presently.

Hmmm.

Port matched and polished they should make a stout beast.

Large chamber or not, I thought they were supposed to be one of the best flowing small block heads. You know, right up until people discovered how cheap and good vortecs were. They used to be really cheap.

I believe there was a 487X which was like the older 461X vs. 461, larger intake runners.
I consider smallblock heads to be either large or small chamber, vs smog or non-smog, but should really group them into lightweight vs heavy castings (new vs old ??).

Dude, nice catch! @68post .

Factory rocker spec tolerance was crappy, at best and 68post is 100% correct or better... I have previously touted the benefit of aftermarket rockers within the boundsbog this MSB.
I like the 1.5 Comp Magnum roller tips primarily for the low, low entry price and the fact that they are simple. You can find these in MY vehicles!
The simpler = the better :imo:
The benefit(s) of ensuring uniform lift across ALL valves simply cannot be overstated.
It is difficult to quantify a $300 set of rollers in a street truck - half of that money can be spent on something else.
Would you happen to have a part number for those rockers? Do they self align or need guide plates?

I do not "happen" to have the part number handy BUT! I looked it up for you and anyone else that is reading this - WORLDWIDE!

These are NOT '87 and up "self-aligning" arms and will be at home in your truck, sir. They require nothing further.

You CANNOT go wrong here for a measly $150. :headbang:

If memory serves me, they are also available as self-aligning if someone needs them for their later style heads.
