I’m sure that almost everyone has dealt with broken steering column plastic collars (not sure of the exact name for it/see pics). I have tried to repair and modify the broken one on my ‘83 K5. I couldn’t find a vendor that sells new replacement collars but even if you were to obtain a new one or pulled a serviceable one from a salvage steering column, the column must be disassembled to remove and install a replacement collar. In order to repair mine, I cut it on one side and spread it open enough to get it off without removing and disassembling the column. My repairs are pretty ugly looking but worked until I bit the bullet and replaced my otherwise worn out column with a completely rebuilt one from Columns Galore (see other pic) but coincidentally, the same collar on the rebuilt column got broken during shipment and I had to return the entire column just for that. What I’d like to know is if anyone has had success with fabricating a two piece clamshell type collar or knows of anyone or any vendor that makes them. These factory collars are notorious for breaking or wearing out. I remember all my dad’s old trucks having these broken collars hanging loose. It seems like a two piece collar would be fairly easy to fabricate out of metal, I just haven’t invested the time yet to try. Anyone else try to fabricate them?
