Broken cross pin bolt

Hi I have a little problem here. The bolt that holds the cross pin in broke but I got that out. In the process of getting it out I pounded on the pin a bunch and kinda mushroomed it I finally drilled the end of the pin and got the bolt out but now I can’t get the pin out. I drilled both ends and used a die grinder on it so both ends of the pin are cut about a quarter to half inch back but it still only moves a little bit. If you look closely at the one picture it looks like there is a little piece of metal jammed in between the pin and the one gear. Could that be holding it? Any ideas how to get the pin out? I’m not worried about the carrier because I’m getting a new one anyway. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

My bet is you still have part of the bolt in there. Those bolts are loctighted you have to heat them before you try to remove them. See how long the bolt is,are you sure you got it all?

Are all those marks on the carrier from a hammer?

If so I believe you may have swaged the hole closed slightly, going around the pin hole with a sharp punch is one of the ways to make a sloppy pin fit a little tighter.

Does the pin move at all?

Yes it moves a little bit

That metal on the pin looks like a bur from the pin rocking back and forth in an egged out spider gear see if you can drive it to one side and knock it off with a die grinder. I'd also take the die grinder to the bores in the carrier,they look like they may be tight in spots

Huh, I think you’re probably fighting a combination of things:

The pin hole isn’t round due to beating on the carrier

The ends of the pin are beat up and mushrooming

And the burr you point out against the spider gear could be hanging up too

I don’t know if those pin bores can be repaired or what the value is on a carrier but I’d gamble it toasted.

I have no advice on the best way to proceed, it does look like you’ve nearly machined the ends of the pin short enough for it to be inside the carrier. If you get them shortened to that point you may be able to roll the spider gears to the opening on the carrier and pull them off of the pin. Pin will fall out after that.

Ok I got it out thanks for all your suggestions! It is bound up in that gear.

Many carriers have a large bearing on one side and a small on the other, the “hub” is the surface the inner bearing race rides on
