A 4l80e is basically a th400 with lockup and overdrive. If your gearing/tire situation is as such, you just drop it back into third and it’s no different than a 400, but you still get lockup. With lockup that helps control trans temp, which is a good thing if you are towing. Both are 1:1 in third.

If you are going LS the harness/computer is pretty much ready to go for running an electronic transmission. These days the information/resources for swapping an 80E is so plentiful and supported there really isn’t any reason not to.

I was going to do a similar donor vehicle for mine, but my mechanic has recommended this Summit 5.3 for my '82 Suburban rebuild. He wants to put a tow kit in the TH400 and keep it, rather than do one of the 4L60/80 units. He doesn't think my towing mission will be well-served by running a 4-speed with larger tires.

However, I'm now thinking about going down to 31" tires (it's currently on 35s), which might mean going to a 4-speed would make sense. Hard to say which way is best...I'll also need to open up the diff covers and confirm the axle ratios. Lots of math to do here.

I run 31s too. I'm just on a 2wd chassis, and I like the look at the factory height. I'm keeping an eye out on the Gen VI BBC with 4L80. When it gets cheap enough, it'll be road trip time.

Well, it was road trip time. And the dumb ---- dropped the motor/ trans and broke the bellhousing right off.

I did get a Gen VI 454 for $300, though. Had to drive all the way to the Mexico border. Could see the border wall from the highway, only 1.25 miles south.

Out of a motorhome a vagrant lit on fire. Supposedly 60k on the engine. Plan to tear into it tomorrow to look around.
