I'm new here... Interested in buying an '87 mystery..

I've found a 1987 4x4 that's been sitting behind my neighbors house and I was able to ask her the status of the truck. She could only tell me that it's not running, "needs a module for $50" (not sure what she's talking about) and it has 300k on it. The body and interior are solid, needs paint, AC, maybe an engine and not sure what else. My question is, when assessing what it may take to get running, is there a general list of things to consider?

She couldn't find the key but waiting for that to see what engine is installed. What would a good offer be to get it out of her yard, I have no idea what a non running truck like this is worth?

Thanks!

Probably the ignition module.

How long has it been sitting? Kinda really need pictures to help determine a value.

And howdy!

Welcome to GMSB.

Pics would be good. No telling what you might get it for. Sometimes people want $200-$300 to get it hauled off and sometimes they think it's an antique that should be on some reality show and it's worth $5000 full of rat **** and birds nests. $500 is paying better than scrap value right now, and anyone she calls like a Pull A Part or we buy cars running or not will not be paying any more than $300. If it's a complete truck, without seeing it, my guess would be in the $500-$800 range.

$500 is about my determination too but I'll have another look when she finds the key and take some pics. THX

yeah, I'd hit her at $500 and wouldn't let her take you over $800. If she's not happy at $500, maybe throw another $100 crying towel cash on it and call it good. She'd probably call you back once she let it soak in that it's not worth all that much in it's condition.

Assume everything needs to be fixed. If the PO wasn't a gearhead it probably needs all the little stuff as well as some big stuff (i.e. knuckle seals, u-joints, wiring, etc). Might be a bargain anyway as long as you don't have great expectations.

No doubt. Work that deal. Do what you can. Many times, people never find those keys either. You might just end up Slim Jimmin' the door to get inside to pop the hood, then taking the steering column apart to put in a new lock cylinder. It sucks getting those out too without the key. If that case, I think I'd just offer her $400 AS IS, without keys and explain what kind of BS it'll be to get new door locks and new cylinder in the column. I'd say the keys are certainly worth $100.
