AC duct 86 K5

I’m putting a switch panel in the AC vent on the right side of the dash bezel. The AC is long gone so I don’t need the vent. The duct is in the way, so can I cut the duct and not affect the defroster? Are they separate ducts?

Defrost is a different duct system, the Y shaped one. Without A/C when turning on the fan the outlets still work and circulate air.
