Okay guys I got an offer the other day to check out a pair of 97 Chevy vortec heads off a 3/4 ton 350 vortec engine. Would these be any good to throw on my current 84 350 short block or for later when I do the 383 stroker kit? I couldn't find out much about these heads online

Nope, those are the ones with the inconel seats. You want the ones from a 1/2 ton.

Just checked back apparently I can't read it's from a 97 1500 with a vortec 350 so a 1/2 ton these are supposed to be good heads?

062(last 3 numbers of part number) are the ones you want.
I was mistaken, only the 1 tons came with the 906 heads, which have the inconel seats, so, the 3/4 heads may be ok...but check those numbers to be sure.

Alright thanks Jim! Figured it would be worth a shot to try to save on the engine rebuild budget 300$ seem to high for a set assembled ready to bolt on?

My only fear is the cracking that was common on the cast iron heads or so I've heard anyways I've never seen one have that happen but the owner said the whole motor ran great no leaks no smoke so I'm assuming I shouldn't have to worry about cracks?

You still have to worry about cracks. My buddy bought a set off a supposedly good running motor and one had a crack.

Not really...they go for around $260 each new and assembled. Its a gamble with the crack issue...maybe get something in writing to get your money back if they are cracked, and have them checked.

I was under the impression that while the 906's were not as good, they are still worth using?

That's what I've been told as well. I know of 2 built motors running them and they run damn good. Not saying they wouldn't maybe have more HP with the 062's, but for a mild build I see nothing wrong with 906's if you get a good deal on them.

They are ok if you just want a good upgrade from TBI heads.
The Inconel exhaust seat in the 906's hinder flow, unless you use 1.6 rockers, then they are a little better.
They are a nice upgrade for work trucks or rock crawlers where the rpms are usually kept low.
The valve grind is better on the 089's, and those heads lend themselves better to More performance minded, higher rpm performance For sport trucks, or Camaros without any machine work.

These heads would be going in my 84 k20 so it wouldn't be seeing higher rpms anyways mostly using as a work truck/plow truck and even a daily driver for short trips would the heads still perform well in this situation?

I wouldn't be afraid to run them on that. I think the hindrance in flow applies more to motors that spin higher rpms.
